Agrics Tanzania delivers farmers their order
The rainy season in Tanzania is about to start, that means it's time to sow! This week Agrics, one of our social businesses, delivered smallholder farmers in 51 villages their order. Bags full of certified maize and sunflower seeds and fertilizer were being hand out. The farmers can buy agricultural inputs on credit via Agrics, ensuring a good harvest in springtime.
By far most people living on rural land in Kenya and Tanzania are dependent for food and income on what their small tract of land can produce. Farmers cultivate small amounts of maize or vegetables which is for the most part meant for their own consumption. Any surplus is sold in order to generate an income too. When there is a disappointing harvest, the problems can be traumatic for the whole family.
The use of certified seeds and fertilizer can improve the harvest significantly. However, good seeds are difficult to obtain in the isolated rural areas and the costs are an obstacle for poor farmers. Therefore Agrics offers small farmers the opportunity to buy certified seeds and fertilizer by paying in installments. Apart from these core products, farmers can also buy additional products or services, including chickens, solar lamps, storage facilities or tractor rental. Farmers are given around six months to pay for these costs.
