Digging waterways for pipeline construction
In the villages of Amagoro and Malaba waterway digging has started for the construction of pipelines. The watertowers and boreholes have been realised already. The pipelines will be the connecting factor that will lead to the flowing of clean drinking water from eleven new water outlets. The construction should be finished before the 1st of July. A total of 12 km of waterway digging has to be done. As you can see on the photo above all of this work is been done by hand.
Finding water in Kenya means drilling dozens of meters deep, in the hope of reaching a good source of water. In the past year ICS drilled for water at three different locations. At two locations sufficient water was struck, though not at the third. Water is pumped up from the two holes into a water tower. A system of water pipes will distribute the water from the tower to a total of eleven water outlets. Each outlet will have a meter for pre-paid cards. Locals can pay directly for the exact amount of water they need with smartcards they can credit in participating neighbourhood shops.
The profits generated are put into the maintenance of the system, repairs when necessary and the quality control checks. This is the only way to ensure that the water outlets continue to supply clean and safe drinking water over the long term.
